Nonsurgical Treatment

Most hamstring pulls heal well with straightforward, nonsurgical treatment.

Rest - Have a rest from your action that caused the pull. Your physician may advise that you use crutches to avoid placing weight in your leg.
Ice - Don't apply ice directly to your skin.
Compression - To avoid blood loss and additional swelling, wear an elastic compression bandage.
Level - Recline to reduce swelling and set your leg up higher resting.
Immobilization - Your physician may recommend a knee splint is worn by you to recover in a short time.

Physical therapy. Physical therapy can start after the initial pain and swelling has settled down.

A treatment plan concentrates on flexibility. Your range of movements gets added. Reinforcing exercises will slowly be added to your own plan as healing progresses. When it's safe to go back to sports action, your physician will recommend to do so.

Operative Treatment

Operation are often required to fix a rip that was complete inside the muscle.

Process - To fix a tendon avulsion, your surgeon may pull back the hamstring muscle into area and eliminate any scar tissue.

This obviously is not an injury you want to have, especially if you play sports. I remember when I was still in school and I was on the volleyball team I got injured. During one of my games, I pulled a hamstring muscle and had to sit out the rest of the season. The best thing is to stay off your feet as much as possible and let it heal.

The injury can be prevented by proper warm-ups. Certain stretching and strengthening exercises as suggested by a PT can also help. Here is a link for more info: http://www.kneepainfrisco.com/pulled-hamstring-frisco-tx
