What causes painful muscle spasms in neck and shoulder?

Lately my neck has started going into intense spasms, although I don't have any history of back pains or sort of troubles. It doesn't appear to be linked with exercise either . Is this a serious problem? It doesn't hurt, it only feels really very unpleasant!! How to get rid of this pain?
